More than a Photograph

“Crab Pot, Roanoke Island, NC

At first glance, you might think this is just a simple photo of a crab pot resting on a dock. It seems ordinary enough, and you might be wondering what it was about this scene that caught the photographer’s eye (which, of course, is me).

But there’s always more beneath the surface. When I look at this well-worn crab pot, I see so much more than just a tool. I see our children gathered on that dock, eagerly lowering the trap into the water with wide eyes and hopeful hearts. I can still feel the thrill they must have felt as they pulled the trap up, wondering what surprises might be inside. I can hear the laughter, the shouts of delight, and the frantic moments as they struggled to free the crab from the pot, only to have it scuttle away, leading to a merry chase across the weathered boards of the dock.

To others, it might just be a crab pot. But to me, it’s a glimpse into the past—a reminder of kids growing up, of moments that seemed so simple then but are cherished now. I see memories woven into every rusted wire and weathered knot.”
